Clan: McGovern of Blacklion and Dowra
Other branches of the clan: MacGovern, Magauran
Irish Clan Name: Mag Shamhrain
The Anglicised versions of the Irish name McGovern vary from region to region, because of the different possible pronunciations of the letter combination “MH”. The most important families of this Sept were allied to powerful families of Northern Leinster, such as the Maguires and O’Rourkes, by marriage. Such alliances are frequently mentioned in the Annals of Ireland between the Thirteenth and Sixteenth Centuries. The name is still found as Magauran, but is more usually found as MacGovern these days. It is still found in largest numbers around the area of the original Clan holdings in an area of North County Cavan and adjacent areas of Counties Leitrim and Fermanagh.
