Lung/Lough Gara Way is a 45 km trail, starting north of Lough O’Flynn and following the Lung River north to Ballaghaderreen, passing numerous iron-age ringforts
The route travels alongside Lough Gara into Kilfree in County Sligo. Lough Gara has over 31 crannogs and is also a winter habitat for the Greenland White-fronted Goose.
The route then links up with the Miner’s Way and Historical Trail north of Boyle crossing into the Curlew Mountains. The first president of Ireland, Dr. Douglas Hyde (1860-1949), lived for many years of his youth between Ballaghaderreen and Frenchpark. Portahard Church and Interpretative Centre features an interpretative display about his life.
