Clan: Egan of Lorrha
Other branches of the clan: MacEgan, Keegan, Hegan, Hegaine.
Irish Clan Name: Mac Aodhan.
This family name means “Son of Egan” or “son of Aodh”, these being Irish equivalents of the Welsh name Hugh. It originated in the Territory of Ui Maine, which in English is called Hy Many. This is the area of mid-County Galway and South County Roscommon.
The Egans are an important Brehon family. From ancient times, Brehons were high-ranking Druids and hereditary Law keepers to a major Clan, and carried down this tradition over the centuries. Many in later times would have become lawyers using the English system of Law in Ireland before the Republic was established.
